Got you a present

All cat owners at some point have to face the brutal fact that their little feline companion has a murderous side. My Ralph is not what you might call your traditional ‘mouser’ – he deals mainly with flying things. And unfortunately he’s quite skilled at it, when he can be bothered. I’ve seen him catch a blue bottle in flight between his two paws. He’s brought me a dragonfly, a maimed blackbird and inexplicably, 8 single feathers – delivered hourly...

Happy New Year! Hic.

Happy New Year! So, I’ve been one week back on the sauce after a careful few glasses of fizz last Saturday. Ironically, I now look back with nostalgia to the days of December when I was dreaming of a drink - but never had that fuzzy-headed feeling. The night after a birthday bash, I am rather missing the hangover-free days of last month!
A resounding point that has emerged from making ‘Dry December’ is how complex our relationship with alcohol is in this country. I’ve...

No Chablis for me

Giving up booze at the most festive time of year has been an extraordinarily enlightening experience for me. The longer I work on this 'Dry December' documentary, the more layers there are revealed. This week we have been out with the booze bus in Soho on a Saturday night where caring paramedics with huge personalities spend their time wiping vomit off people with their eyes rolling back in their heads. Horrific, but is this anything new? It rather reminds me of the old etchings from the 1700s...

Raw veg and Christmas parties for Dry December

Perhaps spending an afternoon making sushi from nothing but raw vegetables is a step too far in my December detox. Yet there was something positive about the holistic social gathering on my hangover-free Sunday - even if you do have to eat uncooked parsnip. Here, it was easy to decide on what to drink instead of alcohol - luckily I'm quite partial to fresh filtered water or herbal tea - but in the more mainstream drinking situations, one's choice is limited. You can have a coke or a cranberry...

Dry December

Ah December - that crisp, cold, glittering month warmed through with mulled wine and parties. Only - not for me this year. I'm taking part in an experiment - no - let's call it a challenge. I'm giving up drinking for the whole of the festive month. 31 days, no booze. Sober at the office Christmas party. No champers for me on Christmas day.
I'll be joined by presenters from around the regions making a programme about alcohol for the Inside Out slot, to be aired onJanuary 9th. We had a last...

Children in Need

I used to watch the TV marathon as a child and longed to be part of it. This year I finally got my chance! It was a very busy and intense day but the result (though extraordinarily loud!) was fantastic. 1.7 million people tuned in to see us at the Big Top at Hyde Park. When I say 'us' I mean the 100 fundraisers and groups that had benefited already from your generosity. Hopefully all this went some way to inspiring you gorgeous Londoners to donate even more money because we managed to raise £4...

In among the plants

My interest in plants and the weather began concurrently, the day after the October 1987 storm swept through our little Broadland village. Seeing just about every tree, if not entirely felled, then at least bald of leaves and sizeable branches, left quite an impression on me. I was sad for the trees until I noticed that three of the apple trees in our garden, despite being tipped over - roots exposed - were determinedly popping out fruit even two years later. These glorious half-dead became a...

Puzzled

I know what you all think. Saturday nights, us media monkeys, champagne hazed are falling out of the latest 'it' bar, shrink-wrapped in a spangly dress and towering heels. Not me. I must confess to not being at all 'hip'. In fact it may be my USP. Instead I spent this Saturday evening doing a jigsaw. Remember them? This one is a lovely stylised view of London. We finished it in one night, the final piece going in at about 4am. Well, I say the final piece - but here's the curious thing. There...
